Katsuta Marathon, held in Hitachinaka city of Ibaraki prefecture, is one of the most popular marathons in January. It takes about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by train.

This race has been held over 60 times, and continuously has been receiving good reviews from participants for their outstanding race operation. Every year, about 15,000 runners flock from all over Japan to run this race.

The undulating course can be a challenge but the encouraging cheer from the spectators continues from start to end.

Many private aid stations are available for the participants on the course. The aid station at the 28km point that serves Tonjiru, Japanese pork miso soup, is especially popular. The race also has a pre-race party where pasta and carbs are served.

Note that traffic control on the course will be released in 4 hours after the race starts, so runners should run on the sidewalk after that point.

The finisher swags include a long sleeve T-shirt and a local specialty, dried sweet potato. Start off the year right by running the ever popular Katsuta marathon!
