In December, the Aoshima Taiheiyo Marathon is held in Aoshima Island of Miyazaki Prefecture in the southern region of Kyushu Island.

The popularity of this race is extremely high although many large races are scheduled close together during that time.

This is a full marathon course that is certificated by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. Participants race through Miyazaki-Jingu Shrine and Aoshima Shrine, both dedicated to ancient gods. The beautiful scenery of the blue ocean from the course is breathtaking. The course has slight undulations but is mostly flat and allows you to aim for your personal best. The official website offers sample clips of the course, so don’t forget to check them out!

On the course, water stations are placed every 3-5 km that serve water and sports drinks, as well as fuels like fruits and energy jells. What really makes this race special is the encouragement from over 2,000 high school students that support and cheer on the runners. It is truly a memorable experience that sets this race apart from others. With this race being in December, why not choose this race to end the year?
