    On Sunday March 12, 2017, more than 20,000 runners participated in the 39th Zurich Marató de Barcelona in the eastern Spanish coastal city of Barcelona. 23 year-old Helen Bekele of Ethiopia, broke the female course record with 2:25:04, shaving more than 4 minutes off her PB and 22 seconds off of last year's course record.

    Jonah Kipkemoi Chesum, 27, from Kenya was the winner of the men's race, with a time of 2:08:57. Kipkemoi took a "surprise victory" as he debuted as one of three designated pacemakers but the group failed to follow his lead. Kipkemoi is Kenya's Paralympic distance runner who has competed in the 2012 London Paralympic Games, finishing sixth and seventh respectively in the 800m and 1,500m.

    Zurich Marató de Barcelona, also known as the Barcelona Marathon is an IAAF Bronze Label Road Race and certified by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races). The next race date is scheduled on Sunday, March 11, 2018.
