The Ohme 30 & 10km Road Race was established in 1967, just 3 years after the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. The promotion poster was titled "Run with Tsuburaya at Ohme Marathon" and featured Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Kokichi Tsuburaya. The first edition featured 182 runners in the 30km division and 155 runners in the 10km division.
This event ignited the first running movement in Japan which later became a part of the running boom in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
In 1975, the B.A.A.- Ohme exchange program was established, sending the top Americans from Boston to Japan to compete, and vice versa. Legendary runners Boston Billy, Randy Thomas, Greg Meyer, and female runner Miki Gorman have participated in the past. Top Japanese runners include Toshihiko Seko, Naoko Takahashi, and Mizuki Noguchi. The B.A.A. – Ohme exchange program agreement was recently renewed until 2020. B.A.A. has no other exchange program besides this one.
This year in 2017, 13,175 runners participated in the 30k division, and 3,425 runners in the 10k. Ezekiel Cheboitibin (Team Toho Refining) was the first Kenyan winner in the 30km division with 1:30:49. Japanese athlete, Ami Utsunomiya (Canon AC Kyushu) took the lead and achieved her PB of 1:46:24 in the female 30k division.
