Kipsang’s impressive time of 2:03:58 was nearly two minutes faster than the previous course record set in 2014. Gideon Kipketer of Kenya came in second place with 2:05:51 and Dickson Chumba (former course record holder also from Kenya) came in third with 2:06:25.
Sarah Chepchirchir, also from Kenya, achieved the first sub 2:20 course record, and fastest female marathon record in Japan. The previous course record was set in 2016 by Helah Kiprop of Kenya with 2:21:27. Chepchirchir’s impressive time of 2:19:47 on the new course was 4 minutes faster than her previous PB. Birhane Dibaba (Ethiopia) placed second with 2:21:19, and Amane Gobena (Ethiopia) came in third with 2:23:09. Top Japanese runners were Hiroto Inoue (MHPS) who placed 8th with 2:08:22 (PB) in the males, and Ayaka Fujimoto who placed 4th in the female division with her personal best of 2:27:08.
This year Tokyo Marathon debuted a new course, consisting of a flatter course. The race started at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and finished at Tokyo Station. This race kicked off the start of the Abbott World Marathon Majors of 2017.
