The Ohme Marathon was launched in 1967 with 337 runners, just 3 years after the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. The theme, Run with Mr. Tsuburaya, was created with hopes of developing Japanese elite marathoners. Mr. Tsuburaya was a bronze medalist in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. This marathon accepted non registered fun runners to participate to promote running throughout Japan, thus being a pioneer of popular marathons in Japan. Every February, about 15,000 runners from athletes to ordinary citizens run the streets of Ohme. This road race marks the start of Spring because of the beautiful full plum blossoms that fill the course.
In 1975 they tied a special agreement with Boston Athletics Association including a runner’s exchange program. In 1976, Bill Rodgers and Miki Gorman ran this race, and the following year this race exceeded 10,000 runners -- the largest marathon at that time. Since then, they have expanded international relations with Amsterdam, Munich and Beijing. Many of the Olympic Champions and world class runners ran in this race such as Rosa Mota (1988 Olympic Women’s Marathon Champion), Naoko Takahashi (2000 Olympic Women’s Marathon Champion) as well as Mizuki Noguchi (2004 Olympic Women’s Marathon Champion).
