“Momotaro” (Peach Boy) is a popular hero of Japanese folklore originating from Okayama Prefecture. An old childless couple discovers a big peach floating down the river and find a baby boy inside. They name him “Momotaro” (Peach Boy) and decide to raise this young child. Years later, he announces his journey to Onigashima (Demon Island) to fight a band of marauding oni (demons or ogres). The old woman prepares kibi-dango (Millet dumplings) for Momotaro to take on his journey.
Before the race, gentlemen in Momotaro costumes hand out Kibi-dango to the runners and also offer Kibi-Dango to the runners at aid stations. Okayama Marathon launched in 2015 with an impressive 15,000 runners, 4,300 volunteers
and 130,000 spectators lining up the entire way. Ms Yuko Arimori, Silver medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and Bronze medalist at the 1996 at Atlanta Olympic
Games, is a special ambassador for this marathon. Join the thousands of runners who compete in this fun and exciting race!
