It’s hard to believe that an institution like the Frostbite Road Race is already celebrating its 35thanniversary.  A longtime fixture on the Tokyo-area road race calendar, Frostbite is a celebration of international cooperation within Japan hosted by the Yokota Striders running club on the grounds of the U.S.-operated Yokota Air Base in Tokyo’s western suburbs.  One of the flattest and fastest half marathon courses in Japan, it features a long out-and back along the base’s main runway, one of the only days of the year that outside civilians are free to enter, explore and experience life within the base.

And you can be sure that that experience will be a full-on American one!  With friendly American base personnel making up the race staff you’ll find an open, welcoming and energetic environment totally different from any other race in Japan, and no doubt you’ll be hearing and speaking more English than Japanese.

With 35 years behind it the Frostbite Road Race is full of its own traditions.  Don’t be thrown off by the Frostbite name, as you’ll have the chance to get plenty warm with the Zumba pre-race warm-up led by a talented crew of women instructors.  You’ll also shake off the cold with the always-popular Frostbite Road Race sweatshirt, a unique and long-lasting part of your collection that will turn heads when you’re out for a run or just relaxing.  After the race get ready to chow down American-style with jumbo-sized hamburgers and hotdogs fresh-grilled on-site by base staff.  The food alone is worth coming for!

Post-race you’ll be able to check your results and splits, bound to be fast ones given the super-flat Frostbite course, on Runnet.  You’ll also be able to download your official finisher’s certificate free of charge and featuring finish line photos shot by pro photographers.  Whether you’re training for a February marathon, want to tackle the half marathon, 5 km or family run in their own right, or just have fun and a tasty burger, the Frostbite Road Race will let you warm up a chilly winter morning and give you an international racing experience just a local train ride away.  Don’t be a stranger!
