Current world leading time of 60:00 was produced by Great Britain's Callum Hawkins at the 71st Edition Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon, held on February 5th, 2017. His personal best beat Ethiopia's Atsedu Tsegay who came in second place with 60:58, followed by Kenyan Joel Mwaura, who produced his personal best with 60:59. Mwaura currently attends Kurashiki High School in Okayama Prefecture of Japan.

"I am very happy with my time but I am also disappointed because I came so close to breaking 60 minutes," said Hawkins, who was ninth in the Olympic marathon last August.
