The Kochi Ryoma Marathon is held in Kochi Prefecture of Shikoku Island, located south of Honshu and east of the island of Kyushu. Every February, the warm weather attracts more than 10,000 runners, despite the peak season. Runners start at the Kochi government office and the course heads east and though the city. During the second half of the race, runners can run alongside the coast and towards the Haruno stadium, the finish point.

The origin of the race name comes from Ryoma Sakamoto, the most famous celebrity in the last period of the Edo era.

The never-ending cheer from spectators and ample aid stations contribute to the popularity of this race. Kochi’s local specialties are passed out at the aid stations, including tomatoes, oranges, and rice balls with bonito flakes. These favorites are highly popular among the runners.

After the race, Kochi’s popular “Shamo-Nabe” is served by local high school students. They also hold a drawing post-race, where 100 finishers can win prizes such as hot spring tickets and goody bags filled with local gifts.
